Ireland, 1980’s. While working as a coal merchant in order to support his family, the devoted dad Bill Furlong discovers disturbing secrets kept hidden by the local church. The church is holding young girls, who are pregnant out of wedlock, confined against their will. Suddenly, Bill’s own past submerges, and as a father of five daughters, he finds himself in a destructive moral dilemma. His discoveries force him to confront the silent complicity of the small town under the control of the Catholic church and to come to terms with his own past.
The film had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival where Emily Watson (‘Breaking the Waves’) won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance.
